Meet the Carolina Medical Team

Carolina Medical Group is built around personal, relationship-based primary care. Meet Dr. David Merrell and the team helping patients feel known, supported, and cared for.

Board-Certified Family Medicine Physician

Dr. Merrell completed his residency in 2015 and has cared for patients in several clinical settings, including emergency medicine, urgent care, hospital medicine, corporate health, and family medicine.

Education and Credentials

Dr. Merrell earned a Bachelor of Science in business management and finance from Brigham Young University. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. He is board certified in family medicine and licensed by the North Carolina Medical Board.

He completed residency from the Cone Family Medicine Residency program in 2015.

His scope of care includes comprehensive routine primary care, with additional areas of interest and expertise in dermatology, sports medicine, sleep medicine, and weight loss management.

Care Philosophy

Dr. Merrell believes in care that focuses on prevention, education, and personalized treatment. His goal is to help patients understand their options so they can make informed decisions about their health.

Outside the Practice

Outside of medicine, Dr. Merrell enjoys spending time with his family, church community, playing sports, home projects, and learning new skills.

Laurie Smith

Nurse Practitioner

Laurie Smith is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner dedicated to providing compassionate care. She earned a BS in Biological Sciences from NC State followed by a Master of Science in Nursing from East Carolina University. She began her career as an RN in the Emergency Department at Cone where she developed a strong clinical foundation. After becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner, she spent several years working as a hospitalist NP caring for those with complex medical conditions. There she met Dr. Merrell. She enjoys caring for patients of all ages but has a special interest in perimenopause and menopause medicine. She is passionate about helping women navigate this important stage of life. Outside of work, her 2 teenage boys keep her busy. She enjoys everything outdoors, running, golf, & a good book.

Jen Golinski, RN, BSN

Registered Nurse & Practice Manager

Jen completed her BSN in 1999 at UNCG & has worked with Dr. Merrell since 2021. She is passionate about building relationships with patients, ensuring they feel comfortable & heard. She strives to create a positive experience with procedures like blood draws while keeping clinic running smoothly. When not at work, she enjoys cooking, volunteering at church, & spending time with her husband and 3 boys.

Darcy Martin

Front Desk Associate

Darcy completed her undergraduate degree in History at BYU Idaho and then went on to earn her Master's in Library Sciences at UNCG. The skills she developed while in school like her keen attention to detail and organization help her provide a wonderful experience for our patients. Outside of work she enjoys time with her family, thrifting, & visiting bakeries.
